Although multiple story recirculation loops have been used in cleanroom applications for years, this was the first attempt at applying such a scheme for the data center flow configuration. Performance of this prototype configuration was tested virtually, in model space, with improvements made before any ground was broken at the physical site.

This server room is a high-density heat load area housing several rows of racked computers and Internet servers. Although the installed-cooling capacity offsets the heat load, the existing configuration does not provide adequate cooling to all critical areas in the room. Air and thermal flow modeling revealed hot spots in the room and areas where cool air is wasted.
